Vintage 2002 was one of the coolest on record, leading to extended ripening periods and thus rich flavours.
90% of the wine comes from McLaren Vale fruit and was fermented in a mixture of French and American oak. The remaining 10% component comes from the finest fruit from the cooler Adelaide Hills region, above McLaren Vale and was matured in 100% New French Oak.
After 18 months in barrel, the wines were blended at the optimum time for fruit and oak integration and carefully prepared for bottling.
The release of our 2002 ‘Reserve’ McLaren Vale Shiraz is the first Shiraz to receive the ‘Reserve status.
Whilst showing typical characteristics from McLaren Vale, the added Adelaide Hills fruit has made the wine wonderfully rich in its deep purple colour and black peppery nose and a hint of the oak to give added complexity. These overtones follow through to the palate, where a well structured and elegantly balanced and soft wine is evident. The finish is long and firm.
Now 6 years old this Shiraz is still in great balance and softening with maturity. It may be enjoyed now or when carefully cellared will reward with added complexity for up to 15 years
